Guitar Finish Types: Three Families, Three Sets of Rules
Almost every guitar finish falls into three families: nitrocellulose lacquer (thin, checks with age and heat), polyurethane or polyester (thick, hard, resists cracking), or oil/wax (no film — it soaks into the wood). Which one you have decides what's safe on it: a poly-safe polish can haze a cracked nitro finish, and wax does nothing on an oiled neck.

Beyond that, run a texture check: nitro feels thin and slightly warm to the touch, often with a faint lacquer smell on an older instrument, while poly feels thicker, glassier, and more like a sealed shell over the wood. If the guitar has an unfinished-looking neck back with visible wood grain you can feel, that's oil or wax, not a clear coat.
Nitrocellulose Lacquer: Thin, Breathable, Prone to Checking
Nitro is a thin, somewhat porous film, and that thinness is both its appeal and its weakness. Polyurethane and Polyester: Thick, Hard, Low-Drama
Poly finishes trade a little of nitro's resonant reputation for a much easier ownership experience. Silicone-based polishes can still build up a hazy film over time, and abrasive cloths or paper towels will dull a glossy poly finish with fine swirl marks the same way they'd dull a car's clear coat.
Satin Finishes: A Sheen Level, Not a Third Material
Satin confuses people because it sounds like a distinct finish type, but it's a sheen, not a chemistry — a satin nitro finish and a satin poly finish are both real, and both start as the same material as their glossy counterparts with a low-sheen topcoat or scuffed final layer. What that means for care: any polish or wax formulated to add shine works against the finish's whole point, buffing satin patches glossy wherever you rub hardest. A lightly damp microfiber cloth handles fingerprints and light grime without disturbing the sheen; save polish and wax for the guitars you actually want gloss on.
Oil and Wax: No Film to Protect
Oil finishes skip the film entirely. Danish oil — commonly a blend of tung or linseed oil and varnish — soaks into the wood grain rather than sitting on top of it, and builders reach for it on necks specifically because it leaves the wood feeling close to bare rather than coated in lacquer.
