Look instead for a string groove worn at an angle, a saddle that's leaning or rocking in its slot, or on an acoustic, a saddle that's compressed and sitting lower than it used to — string tension slowly crushes softer materials over years, which quietly lowers your action without you touching anything.
Bone vs Plastic vs Synthetic: What the Material Actually Changes
Most budget and mid-range guitars ship with a molded plastic nut because it's cheap to produce in bulk, not because it performs best. Plastic is soft enough that string tension gradually cuts into it, and being a poor transmitter of vibration, it tends to soak up some of the string's energy rather than passing it into the neck — the duller, shorter-sustain complaint players notice most on the open strings.
Bone is the traditional upgrade, and most techs reach for it first: it's dense enough to transfer vibration efficiently and hard enough to resist the grooving that plastic suffers. Its one real drawback is that it's a natural material, so density and hardness vary somewhat piece to piece. Lubrication: The Five-Minute Fix Most Players Skip
A dry nut slot is the single most common cause of both pinging and premature groove wear, and it's the cheapest thing on this list to fix. A small dab of nut lubricant — graphite from a pencil tip works in a pinch, but a dedicated PTFE or graphite compound stays put through far more string changes — reduces the friction that causes both problems at once. Work it into each slot with a toothpick, retune, and check the string's slide by pulling it gently to the side and letting go; it should return cleanly with no pop.
Do this every time you change strings and you'll rarely need anything more aggressive. Saddles don't need the same treatment — a saddle doesn't slide against the string the way a nut slot does, so lubricant there does nothing useful; saddle problems are almost always about material, shape, or height rather than friction.

If only the open strings buzz or the guitar is hard to fret in the first three frets specifically, the nut slots are the likely cause.
