Why a Floyd Rose Throws Every String Out of Tune When You Change One

A floating tremolo balances on two hardened knife edges, held level by string tension on one side and spring tension on the other. Loosen or replace one string and that balance shifts, tipping the bridge and pulling every other string flat — not a fault, just the system's one correct spring tension no longer matching what's on it.

Restringing Without Losing the Setup

The one-at-a-time method that works fine on a fixed bridge actively fights you here. Pull one string to full tension on a Floyd and the bridge rocks toward that side immediately, which throws the five strings still on the guitar out of tune before you've even touched them — you'll spend the whole change chasing a moving target. Strandberg's support documentation puts the underlying mechanics plainly: spring tension "has to be carefully and accurately balanced against the exact tensions of the strings," and any change to one string's tension — retuning, breaking, or swapping gauge — "will affect the balance of the tremolo assembly."

Take all six strings off together instead, or as close to it as the locking nut allows. Loosen and unclamp the locking nut blocks first, pull the old strings, clip new ball-ends (or use bare-end locking blocks if that's what your bridge takes), and bring all six up toward pitch roughly together rather than finishing one before starting the next. Working in small tuning increments across the full set keeps the bridge from swinging wildly at any point in the process. Balancing the Spring Claw

Once all six strings are near pitch, check the bridge from the side. It should sit parallel to the body's top — not tipped up toward the neck (springs too weak) or pulled flush against the body (springs too strong). MusicRadar's setup walkthrough frames the fix as a loop rather than a single adjustment: "if your Floyd is sitting forward, tighten the two large screws" on the spring claw to add spring tension and pull it back; if it's sitting back, loosen them. Then "turn the screws slightly, tune and check your progress" — you'll get there through several small passes, not one turn.

Remove the back cavity cover to reach the claw screws, and work in quarter-turns — the claw has real leverage on two or three springs, so a full turn moves the bridge more than it looks like it should. Retune between adjustments, since the strings are still settling too, and don't judge the balance until the tuner reads true. Once the bridge sits level with the guitar in tune, MusicRadar confirms the last step: if it "sits parallel to the guitar's body," lock the top nut clamping bolts down and you're set until the next full string change.

Blocking a Tremolo: Dive-Only or Fully Locked

Blocking trades away pull-up motion — or all tremolo motion — for tuning stability, and it's a legitimate setup choice rather than a workaround for a bad system. Dive-only blocking is the more common version: a wood shim or an adjustable screw stop sits behind the sustain block so the bridge can still dip on a dive but can't rock forward past level. Haze Guitars' explainer notes that "heaps of players only ever use their trems like this, never pulling up to raise the pitch," and that once the stop is in place, "tightening the springs provides extra tension on that side of the tremolo-scale without being able to upset the balance and pull the bridge sharp."

The simplest version needs no hardware at all: set the bridge base flat against the top and add a touch more spring tension, and — as Haze Guitars puts it — "you'll eliminate some of the problems of a fully-floating tremolo" while keeping the ability to dive and wobble the bar. Fully decking the bridge (no float in either direction) goes a step further and is worth doing before a gig if a broken string mid-set would otherwise detune the other five — with the bridge locked flat, one broken string just goes silent instead of taking the rest of the guitar with it. The tradeoff either way is permanent: you're giving up the "up" motion, or all motion, in exchange for a system that behaves more like a fixed bridge.

Knife-Edge and Post Wear: The Drift Nothing Else Fixes

If the bridge is balanced, the strings are fresh, and tuning still creeps after normal use, look at the two pivot points before anything else. The bridge rocks on hardened knife edges seated against posts in the base plate, and that contact is metal-on-metal under full string tension every time you touch the bar. A sharp edge returns to exactly the same spot after a dive or a pull-up; a rounded or pitted one doesn't, so the bridge settles a hair off from where it started and the whole guitar reads slightly flat or sharp depending on which way it drifted.

You can check this with a strong light and a loupe or even a phone camera zoomed in — a healthy edge shows a clean, sharp 90-degree line, while a worn one shows a visible flat spot or rounding at the contact point. Lightly worn edges can sometimes be re-dressed by a tech; rounded ones can't be filed back to sharp, and the fix is new posts and inserts or a bridge swap. This is a wear part, not a maintenance failure — high-tension setups, aggressive whammy use, and cheaper cast (rather than hardened steel) bridges all wear the edges faster, and no amount of spring re-balancing or nut lubrication will fix drift that's coming from here.

When It's Not the Trem

A floating bridge isn't the only place tuning drift comes from, and it's worth ruling out the ordinary causes before you start pulling the back cover off.
