Why a Classical Guitar Isn't a Steel-String With Softer Strings
Classical guitar care differs from steel-string care in four places: nylon strings pull roughly 100 pounds less than steel, so most classical necks skip an adjustable truss rod; strings tie to the bridge instead of using pins; new nylon strings take about a week to settle, not a day; and French polish is stripped by alcohol-based cleaners that are safe on lacquer or poly.

Tension Is About Half a Steel-String's, and Care Follows From That
Nylon strings put dramatically less load on the neck and top than steel ever does. One comparison of the two puts it plainly: "the string-load tension on a steel-string guitar is about 100 pounds higher than on a classical guitar" (Acoustic Guitar). That gap is why a classical guitar's bracing, top thickness, and neck are all built lighter than a steel-string's — the instrument was never engineered to handle steel tension, and stringing one with steel strings (which some players try when nylon is unavailable) risks the top and bridge rather than just sounding wrong.
It also means the usual six-string setup checks don't carry over directly. Relief and action targets built around steel-string tension assume a much heavier pull; a classical guitar's lower, more even tension means smaller adjustments matter more, and the starting numbers are different enough that copying a steel-string target will leave the action wrong either way.
No Adjustable Truss Rod on Most Necks
Because nylon tension is so much lower, most classical necks are reinforced with denser neck wood or a fixed, non-adjustable bar rather than a rod you can turn. As one explainer on the difference puts it, "classical guitars usually use nylon strings, therefore there will be no reason for the truss rod" — though it adds that "there are many classical guitars with truss rod as well," so check yours rather than assume (Rock Guitar Universe).
If your neck doesn't have one, a real forward bow isn't a DIY fix the way it is on an electric — there's no wrench to reach for. Confirm it's actually a neck problem and not humidity, string height, or a loose brace before assuming the worst, and take it to a luthier if the bow is real; a classical neck built without adjustment relies on that build being right from the start.

Ruling out a humidity swing first is free. A cheap hygrometer tells you whether the neck moved because of moisture before you pay a luthier to look at wood.
Stringing at the Bridge: Tie Blocks, Not Pins
Nylon strings don't have the ball end a steel-string bridge pin grips. Instead, "the nylon strings on a classical guitar have a plain end, which means you have to tie them to the bridge with a knot" (Acoustic Guitar). The string threads through a hole in the bridge's tie block, loops back over itself two or three times, and tension cinches the knot tight as the string comes up to pitch — there's no pin to pull or push in.
That's different enough from a standard restring that our general restringing guide doesn't apply step for step here; it's still useful for the tuner-end winding, but skip its bridge-pin section entirely on a classical guitar. Leave a bit more tail on the knot than feels necessary at first — nylon slips more than a tied-off steel string does, and a short tail can work loose after a few days of playing.
New Strings Need About a Week, Not a Day
Steel strings settle in over a session or two. Nylon takes noticeably longer: one long-time classical player put it at "it takes a week for classical guitar strings to settle in," compared to "steel strings on acoustic guitars," which "settle in faster" (Nylon Plucks). Nylon simply stretches more than steel before it stabilizes at pitch.
Retuning often speeds this up — several times a day for the first two or three days, then daily as it settles. Don't chase pitch stability by cranking harder between checks; overtightening a fresh nylon string doesn't make it hold tune any sooner and just adds unnecessary strain while it's still stretching. A clip-on tuner left on the headstock through the settling week makes the frequent rechecks fast enough that you'll actually do them.
French Polish: Water Only, Never Alcohol
Many classical guitars, especially handmade or higher-end ones, are finished in French polish — thin coats of shellac hand-rubbed into the wood rather than sprayed lacquer or poly. It's beautiful and it's fragile, because the finish itself is built from the one thing you'd normally reach for to clean a guitar. A luthier's care guide is direct about it: "shellac is a varnish that is dissolved in alcohol, so simply avoid any product that dissolves alcohol. Neither acetone. No solvents, in short" (David Duyos, luthier). That includes most standard guitar polish and every household cleaner — the same source warns that furniture cleaning products "contain abrasive agents with which you are most likely simply removing the varnish from the guitar."
The safe routine is close to nothing at all: wipe down with a dry cloth after playing, and if something needs to come off, "slightly dampen a soft cloth in water and try to clean the dirt" — nothing else. If a mark won't lift with water alone, leave it and see a luthier rather than reaching for anything stronger.

A dry microfiber cloth after every session is most of what a French-polished classical guitar needs — the finish is the one place where less product is genuinely safer.

Humidity Hits a Classical Top Harder
Classical guitars are more exposed to humidity swings than a typical steel-string, not less. As one comparison of the two builds notes, "a classical guitar is more sensitive to environmental changes than a steel-string acoustic. The lighter construction and thinner top that give it tonal beauty also make it vulnerable to humidity and temperature swings" (MusicStreet). What changes is the margin for error: a swing that a heavier-built steel-string shrugs off can crack a lighter classical top sooner, so keep the hygrometer check and the case-closed habit a little stricter here rather than a little looser.

What to Check First If Something Feels Off
A classical guitar that suddenly buzzes or won't hold tune usually traces back to one of these differences rather than a defect. Buzzing right after a restring is almost always a knot that's slipped at the tie block, not a truss rod issue — recheck the wrap before assuming anything structural. Pitch that keeps drifting a week or more after a string change points to strings that genuinely haven't finished stretching, not a tuning machine problem. And a neck that's developed a bow with no adjustable rod to fix it means humidity or a luthier visit, in that order — not a truss rod you don't have.
None of this makes a classical guitar harder to own, just calibrated differently: lower tension, a different stringing method, a slower settling period, and a finish that asks for less rather than more.
