Why a Bass Isn't a Bigger Six-String
Treat a bass like a six-string with fatter strings and the setup comes out wrong. Standard tension runs close to double a guitar's, relief and action targets sit higher, and the strings themselves last longer if you clean them but cost more upfront. Six-string habits applied here leave the neck over- or under-relieved for what it's actually carrying.

Tension Is the Number Everything Else Follows From
A bass isn't heavier-strung by a little — the combination of thicker gauge and longer scale roughly doubles the load on the neck compared to a six-string. One tension calculator puts a medium-gauge bass set at "around 216 pounds of total tension across the whole neck," against about 103 pounds for a standard 10-46 six-string electric set on a 25.5″ scale. The practical effect shows up right after a restring or gauge change: a bass neck takes longer to settle into the new load than a six-string does, so give it a day before chasing relief numbers rather than adjusting off a measurement taken an hour after stringing up. Relief and Action Run to a Different Target, Not Just a Bigger One
Our DIY setup guide puts six-string electric relief at 0.005″-0.010″ measured at the 7th-8th fret. A Fender Precision Bass setup reference runs noticeably higher, with a target relief of 0.25-0.35mm — 0.010″-0.014″ — at the 7th-8th fret. The extra curve isn't a looser standard; a bass string swings through a wider arc than a guitar string at the same pitch, and the neck needs the added clearance to keep that swing from fretting out.
Action follows the same logic. Against the six-string electric's roughly 4/64″ low E and 3/64″ high E at the 12th fret, that same bass reference targets about 3/32″-7/64″ on the E string and 5/64″ on the G string — measurably more clearance than a guitar carries at the same fret. Set a bass to six-string action numbers and the buzz that follows isn't a truss rod problem; the action itself is under spec for how far the string actually moves.

Why Bass Strings Cost More, and Why They Also Last Longer
A four-string bass set routinely costs two to three times a guitar set, and it isn't just markup. Part of it is the market: bass strings "are not as popular, meaning less production and less competition" than guitar strings, and the winding itself takes more work — the same source notes the manufacturing "is labor-intensive and requires a high level of precision" on the heavier wraps.
The upside is lifespan, and it depends heavily on winding type. Roundwound bass strings — the textured, ridged default on most basses — go dull and dead in weeks to a couple months without upkeep, the same as guitar roundwounds but under more finger pressure and sweat contact from bigger strings. Flatwound sets last considerably longer with far less babying, because there are no ridges in the string surface to trap oil and dead skin — the two causes of string deterioration that kill a roundwound set fastest. If your bass sees heavy sweat or you gig often, wiping down after every session matters more here than on a six-string, simply because there's more metal surface for corrosive oils to sit on.

Storing a Bass Without Adding to the Neck's Job
A bass that's already carrying close to double a six-string's tension doesn't need extra stress piled on during storage. A padded stand is fine for daily reach, but check that the neck rest actually supports a bass neck's width and weight rather than one sized for a guitar; an undersized cradle lets a heavy bass neck lean at an angle over weeks, which is a slower, quieter version of the same stress a poor case fit causes. Wall hangers should sit rated for the extra weight, not just whatever held the last guitar there.
What to Check First If Something Feels Off
Most "my bass plays wrong" complaints trace back to one of these differences rather than an actual defect. Buzzing that shows up after a string change is almost always relief set to a six-string number instead of a bass one — recheck against 0.010″-0.014″ before touching anything else. Strings that sound dead within a month are roundwounds going uncleaned; a wipe-down habit or a switch to flatwounds solves it depending on how much brightness you're willing to trade. And a neck that's developed a lean in storage is a support problem, not a truss rod one — fix the stand or case fit before you reach for a wrench.
None of this makes a bass harder to maintain than a guitar, just differently calibrated.
