What Gauge Actually Changes
Changing string gauge is a tension change, and tension is what your setup is built around. A full step up — 9s to 11s — adds roughly 20% more pull on the neck, enough to shift relief, action, and intonation. A smaller shift, like 10-46 to a 10-52 hybrid set, usually needs only a relief check. Bigger jump, more of the setup moves.

Tension Isn't Just the Number Printed on the Pack
It's tempting to treat "10s" as a fixed tension and "11s" as a fixed amount more, but the gauge number alone doesn't tell you the pull on the neck. D'Addario's tension documentation is explicit that "string tension is determined by a combination of factors, including string gauge, scale length, tuning, and string construction" — a coated set, a pure nickel set, and a stainless set at the same gauge number can land at different tensions. How Big a Jump Actually Needs a Setup
Not every gauge change is worth a full recheck. The size of the jump is what matters, not the act of changing strings at all. One luthier's rule of thumb puts a number on it: a full step up in gauge is roughly 20% more tension across the set, "and that is more than enough to matter," while a small move within the same family — one brand's 9s to another's, or a standard set to a hybrid with a slightly heavier wound string — you can often just restring and adjust intonation, then keep an eye on relief for a day. A full gauge jump is a different situation. Going from 9s to 11s, or down from 12s to 10s, changes the tension the whole guitar was balanced around, and it's worth treating as a real setup rather than a routine string change.

Going Heavier: More Pull, More Relief
Heavier strings pull the neck into more forward bow, which raises relief above where it was set. That's why a real gauge-up jump usually means tightening the truss rod slightly to bring relief back down to target — not because heavier strings are inherently a problem, but because the neck is now responding to a different load than it was adjusted for. Two things beyond relief are easy to miss going heavier. First, action at the 12th fret should be rechecked once relief settles — a neck holding more curve than before can put the saddle height out of spec even if you haven't touched the bridge. Second, a noticeably thicker string can bind in a nut slot cut for the old gauge, especially on the wound strings; if a string won't seat flush or you hear it catching as it comes up to pitch, the slot needs to be widened rather than forced.
Going Lighter: Less Pull, and Where the Buzz Comes From
The same relationship runs in reverse. Less string tension means less forward pull on the neck, so relief tends to drop below spec after a downgauge — sometimes enough to go flat or slightly back-bowed, which narrows the string-to-fret clearance in the middle of the neck. That's a common, specific cause of buzz that shows up right after sizing down rather than a coincidence. Nut slots cause the opposite problem going lighter than they do going heavier: a slot cut for a thicker string leaves a thinner one with room to rattle side to side, which reads as buzz or a sitar-like ringing right at the nut rather than further up the neck. Lubricant fixes friction and pinging, not width — a loose-fitting slot needs filling and recutting, not a dab of graphite.
Recheck Order After You Change Gauge
Work through this in the same order the setup itself depends on:

- Check relief first. Everything downstream depends on this number being right before you touch anything else.
- Recheck action at the 12th fret, since a relief change shifts where the string sits over the frets even with the bridge untouched.
- Reset intonation last. A different gauge changes how much the string needs to be compensated at the saddle, so this is the step most likely to be off after a jump even if relief and action look fine.

Deciding Which Way to Go
Tone and feel are real reasons to change gauge — heavier strings drive an amp harder and hold pitch better in altered tunings, lighter strings ease bends and reduce finger fatigue on long sets — but they're downstream of the tension question, not separate from it. A player chasing a fuller low end who jumps two gauges without expecting a setup will usually blame the guitar for buzz or stiffness that's actually just an unadjusted neck catching up to a new load. Decide on tone and feel first, but budget the recheck time before you buy the strings, not after you're already frustrated with how the guitar plays.
