Why Guitar Hardware Rust Starts Exactly Where Your Hand Sits
Skin runs slightly acidic — pH 4.5 to 6.5 — but it's the chloride in sweat, not the acid, doing most of the damage: chloride ions break down a plated metal's protective oxide layer and pit the bare metal underneath. That's why guitar hardware rust shows up first exactly where your palm rests and your fingers grip, not evenly across the guitar.

Chloride is the mechanism, and it's not unique to guitars — the same chemistry tarnishes rings and watch cases. Anyone whose sweat runs more acidic than that 5.5 average will watch it happen faster than a bandmate's identical guitar sitting in the next case.
None of this is guitar-specific or occasional. Haze Guitars puts it bluntly: "Given time, the acids and salt in anybody's sweat will corrode through any metal bit of your guitar it can reach." A bridge saddle under your picking hand, the screws on a trem block, tuner posts you grip every time you tune — all of it sits in the direct path of sweat and skin oil for hours at a time, session after session, while the back of the headstock or the underside of the bridge plate barely sees contact at all.

Chrome, Nickel, and Gold: Matching the Cleaner to the Plating
Most hardware isn't solid metal — it's plating over steel or brass, and the three finishes behave differently enough that the same cleaner isn't right for all of them. Chrome is usually the top layer of a stack: Philadelphia Luthier Tools explains that chrome hardware is "first plated with copper, then nickel, and last chrome," and chrome itself is "corrosion resistant, and won't tarnish" but comparatively brittle — once it fails, it tends to flake rather than dull evenly. Nickel, plated directly or as the layer under chrome, is "corrosion resistant but tarnishes easily" and "isn't as hard as chrome," which is also why it ages to a warmer, softer look instead of pitting outright.
That difference changes what's safe to reach for:
- Chrome and nickel tolerate a dedicated metal polish or a finish-safe guitar polish worked in with a soft cloth — light, even pressure, no circular scrubbing on pitted spots.
- Gold plating is the exception. It's applied far thinner than chrome or nickel, so anything abrasive — metal polish, steel wool, even a stiff-bristle brush — takes gold off along with the tarnish, and it doesn't grow back. A damp microfiber cloth and a trace of mild soap is the ceiling for gold hardware; if haze survives that, it's past what home cleaning fixes.

Removing Rust That's Already There
Light tarnish comes off with polish and a cloth while the hardware stays on the guitar. Actual rust — a rough orange film on steel screws, saddles, or a trem block where plating has already worn through — needs the parts off the guitar first.
For moderate corrosion, Haze Guitars describes an old technique credited to luthier Dan Erlewine: "soaking the parts in a cleaning solution of 3 parts naptha or lighter fluid and one part light oil" overnight, then brushing them clean. Take the safety warning as seriously as the method: "Naptha/Lighter Fluid is (obviously) massively flammable... Wear gloves and goggles. Work outside to avoid fumes."
For actual rust rather than tarnish, StewMac's own hardware-cleaning writeup describes giving rusty bridge parts "a 15 minute swim in naval jelly rust remover and a water rinse," then finishing stubborn spots with a rotary tool: "a wire wheel — stainless steel wire for heavy corrosion and rust, and brass for gentler cleaning." Naval jelly is a phosphoric-acid gel strong enough to eat rust in minutes, so gloves and eye protection aren't optional, and a short dip beats a long soak — leaving plated parts in it too long strips more than the rust.

When to Replace Instead of Clean
Screws and saddles are cheap, standardized parts, and pitting is metal loss you can't polish back. If a fingernail catches a rough groove rather than sliding over a smooth (if discolored) surface, that's structural, not cosmetic — cleaning won't restore it, and a pitted screw head strips more easily, while a pitted saddle can leave a string sitting slightly uneven under it. New screws and saddles cost a few dollars and remove the guessing.
Bridge plates, tailpieces, and tuner housings are worth the cleanup effort first, since replacement runs real money and often means matching a discontinued finish. The deciding question is the same either way: is this discoloration, or is metal actually gone? A crack, seized tuner gear, or a screw that won't turn without stripping is a "replace" answer regardless of what the rest of the part looks like.
Post-Play Habits That Stop It From Coming Back
Prevention beats every cleaning method above, and it costs ten seconds. Haze Guitars' own routine is about as minimal as it gets: "throw one of those absorbant cloths in your case and do a very basic wipe-down after you play. Seriously, I'm talking ten seconds here." Add one more habit at string changes, while the bridge is already exposed: "buy a cheap toothbrush and leave it in your case. Whenever you change strings, give your bridge and other hardware a good brushing."
